Chester Civic Trust believes the proposed signage here conflicts with attempts to encourage sympathetic signage in the Chester central conservation area. The signage of the previous occupants (Lakeland) was appropriate because its colour scheme was a muted grey, the lettering was elegant and the hanging sign used a suitable metal bracket.

The proposed signage achieves none of these features. In particular, the obtrusive red double signs on the first floor balcony (row frontage above the street) are a crude and alien element in the street scene. They do not even seem to be very legible and their advertising value seems limited. Furthermore, the applicants appear to be ignoring the existing bracket for hanging signs and are instead installing their double-sided projecting signs on an simple fixture attached to the building.

The Civic Trust calls on the LPA to work with the applicants to produce a more harmonious solution in this very sensitive part of the conservation area.
